Cloth, disposable, Talking babies bums...

It is all a matter of personal preference, how your baby is reacting to a particular diaper and how you feel about other factors that come into play when deciding between cloth and disposables.

When you say ‘cloth nappies’ most people instantly think of flat square terry towelling nappies that are attached with a safety pin. A lot has changed! Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN's) are very different - they don’t leak, are easy to use and are also much more attractive than disposables...

So why are disposable diapers avoided by many? Well, disposable diapers have has concerns about dyes, sodium polyacrylate (the super absorbent gel), and dioxin, which is a by-product of bleaching paper. Babies pulling disposables apart and putting pieces of plastic into their noses and mouth, choking on tab papers and linings. Abuse to the environment during the production and disposal of disposable diapers, disposables take a long long time to biodegrade, up to 500 years in some cases, so the millions of tonnes that are added to landfill each year can be avoided if modern cloth nappies are used instead...

A study conducted by Anderson Laboratories in 1999 and published in the Archives of Environmental Health, found that disposable nappies release chemicals called "volatile organic compounds", including toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and dipentene. All of which have been shown to have toxic health effects, such as cancer and brain damage, with long-term or high level exposure. (Remember, a child wears a nappy containing these pretty much 24 hours a day for up to 3 years...)
